Karate has been influenced, changed and grown a huge amount over the last few hundred years. There are several conflicting histories and tales to the origins of many martial arts and karate is no different. The politics and competition within the martial arts world have led to a convoluted past, but there are several similar stories that correspond and the full background is available for members in the Members’ Area.

Within the Tam-Ryu empty hand System we use Kata from Shotokan, Goju-Ryu, Tai Ki, T’ai Chi & Kung Fu with particular attention given to the applications.

Updated !

Simplistically, karate is Japanese in derivation and the many styles of teaching the empty hand combat and sport disciplines have often distinctive similarities as well as distinctive differences.

Many of the appearances of these disciplines are similar (such as Shotokan and Wado-Ryu) but have philosophies that conflict or don’t compliment, since Wado-Ryu has more in common with modern Ju-Jutsu.

Also many styles that look very different from one another have a lot of philosophy in common (such as Kempo and Goju-Ryu).

The “Springboard for Excellence”

The British Martial Arts Federation gives its Bushido and Tam-Ryu Karate students the opportunity to grade for the black belts that are completely included within the BMAF Bushido Curriculum.

For BMAF Members in the Glasgow and Renfrewshire areas, this includes Shotokan and Goju Karate Shodan (1st degree black belt) often by the time the Bushidoka is only 5th Kyu (5 grades from Tam-Ryu 1st black belt)

We also coach students independently for their Black Belt Exams to help them understand philosophies, technical applications, kata rhythms and histories that are absent from most classes but essential to be considered an “accomplished novice” (The meaning of Black Belt).
